Ph.D Grant 
Ph.D students at DePaul CTI are eligible for tuition waivers and competitive research grants that will allow them to complete their degrees. Read on for more information about financial opportunities for doctoral students, deadlines and eligibility information.
 

Competitive Tuition Waiver and Grant Program for PhD Students


The School of CTI will continue the funding program to provide Ph.D. students with tuition waivers (up to 8 credit hours of tuition waivers per student each year) and/or competitive research grants of up to $3,000 to defray expenses associated with research projects.

The program exists to encourage Ph.D. students to engage in research projects and timely completion of their studies. Funding for tuition waivers can be applied to Winter, Spring, and/or Summer I (of next year).

Both salary and non-salary expenses are eligible for competitive grants.

Please note that eligible students can apply for both grants and tuition waivers. If applying for both grants and tuition waivers, submit only the requirements for the competitive grants. Download the online form. (PDF)

The current deadline for grants application is November 9, 2007.

All Ph.D. students are eligible to apply.

Application for Tuition Waivers



The following items are required for application for tuition waivers. Applications received without all required items will be returned without review:
  • Completion of the online application form.
  • Evidence of progress in research, including at least one presentation/poster at the CTI Research Symposium and/or any additional publications such as conference papers or journal articles.
  • A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s faculty research advisor.
  • A list of prior tuition waivers and CTI doctoral grants received.
  • A two page research summary, including a justification of how the tuition waiver will help in achieving research goals.

Note that a research proposal and final report are not required.

Application for Competitive Grants



The following items are required for application for competitive grants. Applications received without all required items will be returned without review:

  • Completion of the online application form.
  • Evidence of progress in research, including presentations/posters at conferences or symposium, and publications such as technical reports, conference papers, journal articles, or book chapters.
  • A proposal for the research project.
  • A letter of recommendation and agreement for supervision from the applicant’s faculty research advisor.
  • A list of prior CTI doctoral grants and tuition waivers received.
  • Recipients of previous year grants should submit a copy of the status report as part of their application.
  • Students who receive CTI stipends are not eligible for stipends but can request other forms of research support.
  • No computer hardware.

Final Report (Competitive Grant Only): By the end of the grant period (June 30) the student awardee should provide a one-page report summarizing the outcome and status of the funded project. The report should be approved and signed by the faculty advisor.

Outline of Proposal (Competitive Grant Only):  A complete proposal should not exceed 5 double-spaced pages at a 11 point font, and should include the following:

  • Goals and Objectives, and Financial Need for the Project;
  • Context for the project, relationship to prior research, and/or literature review;
  • Plan of Work, including a description of how activities will meet goals and objectives;
  • Description of the outcomes and expected significance of the project;
  • Budget and Budget Narrative.

Student applicants are encouraged and expected to work closely with their research advisor on this proposal.

Budget Guidelines (Competitive Grant Only)

  • Both salary and non-salary expenses are eligible. The maximum budget of $3,000 can be allocated to salary, non-salary expenses, or a combination of both.
  • CTI Faculty may not receive salary in this budget
  • Eligible non-salary expenses may include supplies, participant pay for research projects, and data collection costs. Funding of participant pay related to carrying out research projects will be limited to $8 per hour.
  • Travel expenses are not permissible for the competitive grant.
  • PhD students can receive travel support through the PhD Committee travel grant program independently of this program
