Summary

In this course, students will continue the study of issues in the sciences, social sciences, and management in which quantitative data plays a significant role. A variety of analytical approaches will be explored, including numerical, graphical, verbal/logical, and algebraic. Extensive use will be made of computer tools such as Access, SPSS, programming environments, Word, Excel, and the Internet.

No textbook is required for this course. Please bring either a flash drive to every class. Label with your name and e-mail address in case they become misplaced.






Grading

Your performance evaluation will be computed as follows:

  • In-class Team Activities: 25%,
  • Individual Homework Assignments: 25%,
  • Midterm Exam: 25%,
  • Final Exam: 25%.


Prerequisites

LSP 120 or successful completion of the MTL1 Proficiency Exam.

... will be accessible through D2L. All homework assignments, grades and feedback, class notes, examples, and any other related class materials will be posted at this site. You will need your DePaul campusconnect ID to login to D2L. You are responsible for checking D2L regularly to stay up to date with class material, announcements, and your assignments and their due date/time.


In-class Team Activities and Individual Homework Assignments

In-class Team Activities:


A good portion of class time will be spent working in groups and doing hands-on active learning. The result of your group activity will be printed in class, signed by all team members, and turned in before you leave class. No late team work, nor team work completed outside of class, will be accepted.

There will be approximately 12-14 in-class activities, and your two lowest scores from these will be dropped at the end of the quarter.

Individual Homework Assignments:


There will be weekly individual assignments to be completed outside of class. These assignments will be posted on D2L regularly under the "Assignments" link. You are responsible for logging into D2L and checking for assignments every week. Homework assignments must be completed individually and turned in on time THROUGH D2L ONLY. Assignments should not be e-mailed to your professor! Late submissions of individual homework assignments will lose 20% during the seven days after the due date and will not be accepted after that (0 credit).






Tentative Weekly Schedule:



Normal Distributions.

Introduction to descriptive statistics. Correlation; How statistics can deceive (Simpson's Paradox). Probability and risk.
Number systems and logarithms. Midterm exam
Simple databases; importing a spreadsheet into a database.
Relational databases, normalization, database queries.

Database forms, reports, switchboard. Introduction to algorithms.
Computer programming with conditionals and repetition structures.
(Basic web design with scripting).

Online Course Evaluations

They are a requirement of the course and are key to continue to provide you with the highest quality of teaching. The evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
