Summary

Being able to SEE is something we take for granted. It is our best developed sense, but putting down marks that represent what our eye perceives takes practice. It?s a kind of meditative state, that when you know how to get there you will feel a magical and alive in a whole new way. By drawing and drawing and drawing, we learn to understand what we see, and through that understanding we are able develop our own visual vocabulary to express ourselves. This class, in and out of the classroom is a place to sharpen our abilities to see, to let the world around us stand still, to lose awareness of the passage of time, and to be one with our drawings.

We will go over basic perspective and rendering techniques, but our focus will be drawing with our EYES. There is too much focus and fear about our hands in the world of drawing... but if you can write your name clear enough for others to be able to understand what it says, your hand is fine.

Before drawing becomes second nature, we must learn to be accurate and deliberate.

Grading

You will be graded pass/fail in 4 different quadrants each week. Attendance, Participation, Completion of Work, Effort. Each quadrant is filled when you succeeded in that quadrant. The only quadrants you can make up is Completion of Work and Effort. If you missed an assignment, bring it in as soon as you can. Also if you bring in artists? drawings that inspire you, or share more drawings than you are required to on tumblr, this CAN help your grade. The rest will remain empty. If you are sick a reasonable amount of classes you don?t have to worry, as long as you let me know. If you come to class, have your work done, and participate in critiques and discussion you have nothing to worry about. If you ever have questions about your grade you can come talk to me. A = 100-93, A- = 92-90, B+ = 89-88, B = 87-83, B- = 82-80, C+ =79-78, C = 77-73, C- = 72-70, D+ = 69-68, D = 67-63, D- = 62-60, F 59- Attendance is mandatory. Most classes we will be working on in class
projects, and you will need to be present for them. We have a lot to get done, and if you are tardy it will affect your grade, and put you behind. Tardiness is defined as not in the classroom when attendance is called or departing before the class has been formally dismissed by the instructor. Tardiness that exceeds thirty minutes will be counted as an absence. TWO late arrivals or early departures, or a combination of both, are counted as one absence. If you arrive late for class, it is your responsibility to make sure that you have been marked tardy rather than absent. I respond most quickly to my private email address. Journal

You may use your own private sketchbook, or the wirebound sketchbook required. You must draw from life at MINIMUM 5 days a week, 30 minutes each of those days. All drawings must be in ink, no penciling. In the beginning it will be difficult, but by moving through mistakes, and living with them, you will approach each new drawing with that new understanding. Make mistakes! By each Tuesday you must upload a minimum of 3 drawings to the shared drawing class tumblr page. In the image description write your at minimum your name. Online Course Evaluations

Evaluations are a way for students to provide valuable feedback regarding their instructor and the course. Detailed feedback will enable the instructor to continuously tailor teaching methods and course content to meet the learning goals of the course and the academic needs of the students. They are a requirement of the course and are key to continue to provide you with the highest quality of teaching. The evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
