Summary

The goal of this course is for each student to gain an advanced working competency in studio and location lighting techniques. Students will learn the safe and efficient use of set electrical equipment, advanced lighting units (Hmi, Led, Kino Flo & tungsten) and grip equipment ? overheads & specialty rigs. Students will gain valuable on-set time accomplishing complex visual tasks. It is expected that each student create imagery that engages an audience specifically through their use of lighting. The analysis of the visual lighting cues that contribute to an audience?s engagement will be dissected and examined. Students will gain the ability to identify, define and construct a meaningful visual lighting plan for their unique stories.

Prerequisites

Lighting for Cinema 1 or Advanced Lighting & Camera Motion ? DC477 or permission from Instructor.


Additional required supplies:

A pair of heat resistant work gloves, a small flashlight ? handheld or headband style, a 6? or 8? adjustable crescent wrench and a utility knife. Optional items ? a small work pouch/bag and an electrical tester. Bring these items to class every week. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear to work on the stage. No open toe shoes are allowed.


Course Management System:

Assignments, readings and grading will be done online using the COLWeb system - https://col.cdm.depaul.edu. Students must check the information provided online each week. Acceptable file formats are .jpg, .mov, .m4v, .cr2, .rar, .avi, .pdf and .doc. Larger files should be compressed into a .zip file. Late assignments deduct 1 pt. for each week late.

Online Course Evaluations

Evaluations are a way for students to provide valuable feedback regarding their instructor and the course. The evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
