Summary

An introduction to problem solving, algorithms and structured programming using a higher-level programming language. The course will focus on skills for developing algorithms, and for writing and debugging programs. Students will learn how and when to use loops, conditionals, and functional abstractions in the context of problems motivated by real world applications.

Grading

The grade breakdown will be as follows:

The grading scale will be determined by a curve. The cutoffs will be no higher than the following: 90-100, A; 80-89.99, B; 70-79.99, C; 60-69.99, D; 0-59.99, F. Plusses and minuses will be given at the high/low ends of each grade range (no A+'s or D-'s).




Prerequisites

MAT 130 or Mathematics Diagnostic Test placement into MAT 140.




Course policies

Late submissions:

To be considered on time, an assignment must be turned in by the time and date specified on the assignment write-up. Lab assignments must be submitted on time. Late homework assignments may be submitted up to 5 days late; however, assignments will be penalized .5 points (out of 10) for each day that they are late.

Policies on working together:

Lab assignments: You may work together in groups of 2 or 3. Please place a comment at the beginning of the file you turn in stating your name and any other students in your group.

Homework assignments: You must work alone! You may not copy any code from another student (in the current course or past course) or from the Web.

Online Course Evaluations

The evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
