Summary

This first course in database systems will introduce you to a system for managing large volumes of data. You will learn why modern database systems are needed, how to program them, and some principles behind the design of a database that leads to effective management. We will focus on the relational model, SQL, indexes and normalization as well as a selection of advanced topics such as constraints and triggers, transactions, database programming, semi-structured data, and recursive SQL.

The course will consist of reading and homework assignments, two mid-terms, and an end-term. Class attendance is mandatory and participation encouraged.



Texts

Ullman, Widom, A First Course in Database Systems, Prentice-Hall, 3rd edition, 2008. As an optional text (as reference for SQL and PL/SQL) you can consider Murach's Oracle SQL and PL/SQL, by Joel Murach, 2008.


Grading

Homework: 30%, Midterm1: 20%, Midterm2: 20%, Final: 30%.

A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
