Summary

IT 130 is an introductory computing course where students develop interactive web pages. Students acquire the basics of web formatting (HTML/CSS), elementary programming concepts (JavaScript), and an overview of internet technologies. The course satisfies the Scientific Inquiry Elective Liberal Studies Requirement.


Texts

Textbook
At this time IT 130 does not have an official text. In addition to instructor notes, it uses free online resources including www.w3schools.com as a reference for HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Software
JEdit for editing HTML and CSS files. jEdit is available for PCs and Macs and is installed in all university labs.

Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browsers are recommended for IT 130. Both browsers provide good error diagnostics. Google Chrome provides a javascript console for typing live commands that interact with the current page.

MSPaint for modifying images. MSPaint comes with Windows XP and can be accessed via Programs >> Accessories >> Paint.

Filezilla (SSH client) for uploading HTML, CSS and image files to the students.depaul.edu server. SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is preferred to FTP because it is secure and more user friendly.
Student Accounts for Hosting Web Pages:
As of Winter 2012, CDM has provided student accounts for all students enrolled in IT 130. Faculty should already have accounts. Students have their account through the following quarter.

Students can activate/reset their accounts by going to
https://accountactivate.cdm.depaul.edu

Files can be transferred using Filezilla or similar software using sftp to the host studentweb.cstcis.cti.depaul.edu.

If files are placed in the home directory (no need for public_html folder), they are viewed as studentweb.cstcis.cti.depaul.edu/username/filename.html

Online Course Evaluations

They are a requirement of the course and are key to continue to provide you with the highest quality of teaching. The evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
