    SoC Research Colloquium

Speaker: Michael Filhol, Ph.D., CNRS, France

Date and Time: Thursday April 25th, noon-1PM

    Location: CDM 216

    Zoom: https://depaul.zoom.us/j/98108185692

Title: Representing, synthesizing and processing languages neither spoken nor written

Abstract: Natural Language Processing has developed with computers, initially on text, with the grail of automatic translation still being pursued today. Speech synthesis and voice recognition was later addressed, covering another modality of language. Sign language though, of the gestural modality and with no adopted written form yet, was never approached by NLP until almost 2000. In this talk we will look at those languages, the features they exhibit and how to describe them with formal models to allow their synthesis and processing. After presenting the AZee approach and how it may differ from the ones used on spoken languages, we will present the results of a continued collaboration with DePaul. The presentation will end with a demonstration of how it can support the development of a standard graphical representation... and a writing system?

Title: Leveraging GNU Parallel for Optimal Utilization of HPC Resources

Abstract: Efficiently exploiting parallelism on large-scale systems presents significant challenges, particularly when aiming for a low-barrier, non-programmatic approach. This talk showcases the effective application of GNU Parallel for optimizing the use of four key HPC resources: (1) CPUs, (2) GPUs, (3) NVMe storage, and (4) large-scale Storage systems. The talk aims at positioning GNU Parallel not merely as a utility tool but as a mainstream, productive instrument for diverse HPC workloads.

The talk will illustrate GNU Parallel's capacity to efficiently harness CPU resources across up to 9,000 compute nodes on OLCF Frontier, with a manageable increase in overhead even as node utilization scales up. The approach is further elucidated through a series of practical vignettes. These include diverse applications, ranging from daily tasks to massively scaled operations, all underpinned by real-world applications and practical use cases. These vignettes offer generalized solutions for common computational and I/O patterns observed in real-world applications, validated through scalable examples.

Bio: Dr. Ketan Maheshwari is a Senior Linux Systems Engineer within the NCCS Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
