Software

Students have access to the free software listed below for educational use. There are also a number of technology vendors that are part of the Demon Discounts program and offer discounted products and services to the university community.

Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching

The Azure Dev Tools for Teaching is a special program that provides free tools to faculty and students, including Project, SQL Server, Visio, Visual Studio, operating systems, and so on. To get the software:

  1. Go to the Azure Dev Tools for Teaching website.
  2. Click the "Sign In" button. You do not need to register. Use your @depaul.edu email account and password.
  3. The software can be found under the "Software" tab.
  4. The product key for the software you are trying to download will be appear after you click the "View Key" button.

VMware Academic Software Licensing Program

For CDM Students

If you are in a course that requires the use of licensed VMware software, access to the software will be provided to you through your instructor. If you do not have access and will need the software to complete your coursework, please contact your instructor and let them know to follow the instructions in the For CDM Instructors section below.

Once your instructor has requested access for your course and it has been approved, you will receive an email on your DePaul email address (username@depaul.edu) from info@itacademy.brightspace.com. Please check your Spam/Junk folder, as it may end up there.

The email will contain instructions on how to claim the VMware subscription. Please note that this process will involve creating an account with Academic Software Licensing Program or logging into one if you already created one.

For CDM Instructors

Instructors, if you would like to request access to the VMware Academic Software Licensing Program for your course, you will need to submit a request to techsupport@cdm.depaul.edu with the following information:

Please note: CDM has limited subscriptions for VMware Academic Software Licensing Program, so please only submit information for your students who need VMware software to complete coursework.

  • Course Number that requires access
  • List of Students that require access to complete coursework including their:
    • First Name
    • Last Name
    • DePaul email address (username@depaul.edu)
      • OR DePaul BlueKey Username
  • Please submit the list of students as an Excel or *.CSV file.

IBM

IBM InfoSphere BigInsights
InfoSphere BigInsights combines the power of Hadoop with enterprise-grade features including visualization & exploration, advanced analytics, and security & administration. InfoSphere BigInsights Quick Start Edition, the latest edition to the InfoSphere BigInsights family, is a free, downloadable, non-production version.

IBM Infosphere Streams
InfoSphere Streams is an advanced computing platform that can quickly ingest, analyze and correlate information as it arrives from thousands of real-time sources. Because it can handle high throughput rates, InfoSphere Streams can analyze millions of events per second, enabling sub-millisecond response times and instant decision-making. Now you can get your hands on this technology with InfoSphere Streams Quick Start Edition, a free, downloadable, non-production version.

IBM DB2 Express
IBM DB2 Express-C is a no-charge community edition of the DB2 data server. It is ideal for small businesses and multi-branch companies, as well as developers and business partners who serve these clients. DB2 Express-C can be setup quickly, is easy-to-use, and includes self-managing capabilities. It also embodies all of the core features of the more scalable DB2 editions, including Data Studio, Time Travel Query, pureXML and Compression Backup.

Optimal Workshop

Optimal Workshop is a user research platform helpful for students in the HCI, ISM, and Experience Design programs. Their tools (which include card sorting, tree testing, and first click) are aimed to guide decisions in interaction design and information architecture.

Linux at CDM

CDM offers Ubuntu Linux in the Lan lab (CDM 659). If you need access to these machines, please contact a lab assistant for assistance with the login procedure.

For certain classes, you might need access to the Linux Environment remotely to complete an assignment. Please follow these steps:

  • Connect via SSH to: cdmlinux.cdm.depaul.edu
  • Enter your Campus Connect username/password. Do not put DPU before your username when logging into Linux via SSH.

FTP/SFTP

  • FileZilla is a popular free FTP client for all operating systems.
    Please be aware that the installer may attempt to install 3rd-party adware.
    Read through the installation steps carefully.
