This class discusses how to design and analyze algorithms. We will cover the central subjects of the
area including sorting, searching, graph algorithms, greedy strategies, dynamic programming, and how to cope with hard problems.


The required textbook is Johnsonbaugh, Schaefer, Algorithms, Prentice-Hall, 2004.


There will be weekly written assignments, a midterm exam and a final exam. All exams will be cumulative. The course grade will be computed on the following basis:

Assignments: 40%,
Midterm: 30%,
Final: 30%.

Written assignments are due at the beginning of class. If you are unable to attend class the day that an assignment or program is due, you must make prior arrangements to get the assignment to me. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Make-up exams will not be given. If there is an extreme emergency and you must miss an exam, you must notify me in advance and provide documented evidence of the emergency. In those cases, you are responsible for talking to me as soon as possible about alternative arrangements.


Data structures (CSC 383 or CSC 393) and Discrete Mathematics (MAT 140, MAT 141 recommended).

Online Course Evaluations

Evaluations are a way for students to provide valuable feedback regarding their instructor and the course. They are a requirement of the course and are key to continue to provide you with the highest quality of teaching. The evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
