Summary

This course provides an overview of user research and usability evaluation methods. Working as teams, students choose a working computer application and practice course methods on it throughout the term. Students learn to conduct user research to determine user needs and core tasks for the chosen application. User research results are presented in the form of user profiles (aka personas) and task scenarios. The results of user research are then used to guide usability evaluation methods including heuristic evaluation, walkthroughs and usability tests.

Grading

Grading will be based on class participation (10%), group projects (45%), a quiz (5%), a midterm (20%), and a final exam (20%). Students receiving more than 90% of possible points are guaranteed at least an A-, more than 80% at least a B-, more than 70% at least a C-, and more than 60% at least a D.


Prerequisites

IM 210 or ISM 210.


Expectations

The course will involve completing readings before class meetings and preparing for class discussions. Class meetings will involve a combination of lecture, discussions, hands-on activities, presentations of homework projects, and group work. There will be a quiz, a midterm, and a final exam to assess understanding of course topics. Homework projects will be conducted in teams, and are designed to provide skills practice and deeper engagement with course concepts.

Online Course Evaluations

Evaluations are a way for students to provide valuable feedback regarding their instructor and the course. Detailed feedback will enable the instructor to continuously tailor teaching methods and course content to meet the learning goals of the course and the academic needs of the students. They are a requirement of the course and are key to continue to provide you with the highest quality of teaching. The evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
