Summary

Management and boards continue to recognize the importance of effectively managing information technology (IT) assets -- to meet business objectives and to thoughtfully manage IT related business risks. This course examines the key principles related to auditing information technology processes and related controls and is designed to meet the increasing needs of audit, security and risk management professionals. In addition, this course may aid in the preparation for the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) exam.

Homework Assignments = 60%; Final Exam = 30%; Participation = 10%; Total = 100%


Prerequisites

Students should possess a foundational understanding of IT systems and related processes and risk management concepts, however, no specific course prerequisite is required.


Course objectives

Through the application of COBIT and related IT governance frameworks, students will develop a common vocabulary for understanding sources of IT risk and performing an IT audit. Students will further gain hands-on experience in analyzing and assessing IT risks and controls through various case studies, lectures, and discussions. The primary objectives of the course are to -- (1) Establish an understanding of the IT environment and the role of the IT auditor, (2) Recognize how corporate and IT governance practices impact the IT audit process, (3) Develop an understanding of the IT audit process i.e., risk assessment, planning, standards, guidelines and best practices, and (4) Survey IT audit approaches to: (a) Systems development and maintenance, (b) IT security, (c) IT service delivery and support, (d) business continuity and disaster recovery, and (e) data analytics and fraud detection.

Detailed feedback will enable the instructor to continuously tailor teaching methods and course content to meet the learning goals of the course and the academic needs of the students. They are a requirement of the course and are key to continue to provide you with the highest quality of teaching. The evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
