Summary

This course covers how an enterprise coordinates and effectively manages all its IT projects and programs through program management and the IT program management office or IT PMO. Students learn the role of the IT PMO in generating business value through establishing and maintaining the project and program processes, tools and relationships and in assisting project managers, program managers, stakeholders and the executive steering committee.

In addition students analyze the role of program management in coordinating the delivery of expected program benefits by managing stakeholder expectations, and in establishing program governance. Time is spent determining which situations dictate enterprise management mechanism is preferred: program management or the IT PMO.

By the end of the course the student can:.

-- determine the appropriate enterprise project governance model: the IT PMO or program management
-- develop a program management business plan
-- develop a business plan for different levels of IT PMO
-- develop a business plan for different types of IT PMO
-- appreciate the role of the IT PMO in IT portfolio management

*In-class students earn participation credit by

**DL students earn participation credit by posting their insights, thoughts, concerns, etc. on the weekly discussion forum after reading the required assignments and watching the weekly lecture. Students should be conversing with one another to get credit. To get credit the postings must be on or before the closing date.

Late Submissions
Late Submissions are always penalized unless prior arrangements are made through email with instructor. However, on the FINAL TAKE HOME EXAM late submissions ARE NOT allowed.

IS 430 or PM 430.



Teaching Method

A combination of teaching methods will be used (lectures, class exercises, group presentations, etc).

This course will make use of texts, handouts, current articles, business methodologies, lectures, and case studies to present a picture of the project management landscape. In particular, we will devote some time each week to analyzing case studies of pertinent IT project related issues and problems.

A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation. Students complete the evaluation online in CampusConnect.
