Summary

Summary of course

This course describes a wide array of methods for evaluating the user experience of products and interfaces. We will discuss and practice methods such as heuristic and expert evaluations, cognitive walkthroughs, exploratory, ethnographies, usability testing (formative and summative), surveys, eye tracking, contextual inquiries and hybrid focus groups.
 

Goals to learn how to:

  • Understand the role of usability evaluation
  • Establish appropriate evaluation objectives
  • Select evaluation methods that address evaluation objectives and take into account existing constraints
  • Articulate advantages and disadvantages of usability evaluation methods
  • Properly use various usability evaluation methods
  • Present results and prepare effective report

Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:

  1. Apply multiple types of user research;
  2. Apply multiple types of evaluation of user interfaces;
  3. Recommend appropriate evaluation method(s) for a particular situation;
  4. Describe the role and value of user research and evaluation in the design process;
  5. Effectively communicate the results of user research and evaluation through reports and presentations.

Additional Objectives
Students will:

  • Develop collaboration and leadership skills by working in teams;
  • Complete a project that can be featured as evidence of UX research skills in a professional portfolio;
  • Explore and connect personal interests to course topics;
  • Connect design and technical knowledge to issues and methods of user experience research.

The course involves lecture, discussions, hands-on activities, presentations, and group work. Because it is critical

• Group Project. Students work in project teams most of the quarter.

Online Course Evaluations Evaluations are a way for students to provide valuable feedback regarding their instructor and the course. The evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely separate from the student?s identity. Course Policies as Suggested by the Dean of Students Office Attendance: Students are expected to attend each class and to remain for the duration.

Class Discussion: Student participation in class discussions will be measured in two ways. First, students are highly encouraged to ask questions and offer comments relevant to the day?s topic.

Participation allows the instructor to ?hear? the student?s voice when grading papers. Secondly, students will be called upon by the instructor to offer comments related to the reading assignments. Students must keep up with the reading to participate in class discussion.

Attitude: A professional and academic attitude is expected throughout this course. Measurable examples of non-academic or unprofessional attitude include but are not limited to: talking to others when the instructor is speaking, mocking another?s opinion, cell phones ringing, emailing, texting or using the internet whether on a phone or computer. If any issues arise a student may be asked to leave the classroom. The professor will work with the Dean of Students Office to navigate such student issues.
