Preparing Budgets, understanding Financials is required in almost every role in healthcare. As you excel these responsibilities and expectations increases. In this course we will cover important aspects of accounting and financial management in healthcare.
This course is intended to prepare the student to effectively interact with accounting and financial management staff and participate in various aspects of financial control and planning.
The curriculum provides an historical perspective of financial management in healthcare, identifying trends in the industry and the forces that influence the financing of healthcare organizations.
Financial statements, the interpretation and analysis of financial reports, and topics such as cost-benefit analysis, budgeting, and capital management will also be addressed.
Consideration will be given to the cost effectiveness and financial future of DePaul University, healthcare organizations.
Prerequisite(s): Status as a Health Informatics student is a prerequisite for this class. For project, students will focus on Preparing and Publishing a Financial Report for a Hospital
Course Goals By the end of the quarter, Healthcare Informatics students will be able to: 1. Through understanding of Accounting and Financial functions in Healthcare Management, with emphasis on healthcare informatics 2. Be able to Utilize & Evaluate Accounting & Financial using tools and terminologies 3. Ability to prepare, review and make decisions from financial statements and understand the implications 4. Analyze any healthcare organization based on financial metrics.
This syllabus is subject to change as necessary during the quarter. If a change occurs, it will be thoroughly addressed during class, posted under Announcements in D2L and sent via email.
Evaluations are a way for students to provide valuable feedback regarding their instructor and the course. Detailed feedback will enable the instructor to continuously tailor teaching methods and course
content to meet the learning goals of the course and the academic needs of the students. They are a requirement of the course and are key to continue to provide you with the highest quality of teaching. The
evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely
separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation.
