Towards a Robotic Architecture: Robots Are About Being Human

StudioCHI is pleased to invite you to a talk by Dr. Mahesh Daas, a designer, technologist, theorist and innovator who currently serves as dean of the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Kansas. (http://www.mahesh.org/)

We are at the dawn of a new era, one in which new life forms of our creation will walk and work among us. They will help open up unprecedented possibilities, challenge our worldviews, redefine the human condition and, as part of these pervasive transformations, impact architecture. Innovation in robotics is taking place at such a breakneck speed that every day brings new inventions too numerous to track. Just as computers and computation have become integrated into virtually every discipline, robotics is also being integrated into all fields of knowledge. Robots are captivating because robots are us. Robots are about life and more so about being human. They are life-like in their existence.

The book Towards A Robotic Architecture (2018), co-edited by Mahesh Daas and Andrew John Wit, advances a broad-based reclassification of robotics as a field. Through the rubric of being, thinking, doing and becoming, Daas will endeavor to show the rich texture of the field and a way of making sense of a very complex phenomenon. He will specifically delve into research in architectural robotics by offering frameworks that could help navigate the extraordinarily powerful, wild and rugged landscape of knowledge.

The event is free and open to the public. A book signing and wine and cheese reception will follow.
