Film Fatales Screening: Daughters of the Dust Screening

Julie Dash's 'Daughters of the Dust' is one of the most influential yet underrated feminist films of all time. One doesn't have to look farther than Beyonce's recent visual album 'Lemonade' to see the impact the film has had.

Not only was Julie Dash's one of the only working black female directors in the 90's, she became the first African American woman to have a movie in general theatrical release after this film had a small bout of success in New York shortly after its premiere at Sundance.

This screening will be accompanied by discussion afterwards and FREE FOOD. Brings your friends!

CHA/DePaul Documentary Film Premiere with Co-host Chaz Ebert

OME SUPPORT THE NEWEST FEMALE VOICES IN DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING

Join us for the premiere of four powerful short films by 16 female Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) residents to document the unseen realities that surround them. Ranging from the deep imprint of housing insecurity, the stigma faced by LGBTQ youth, to the devastation of neighborhood violence, the stories are crafted from the unique point-of-view of young women living in Chicago's most affected communities.

The four documentary films are a result of the 2017 DePaul/CHA documentary filmmaking program; a six-week summer intensive where CHA highschoolers have the opportunity to learn all aspects of filmmaking from DePaul graduate film students and award-winning faculty mentors. They engage in every level of production including pre-production, camera operation, lighting, sound, and post-production.

    WITH SPECIAL GUEST CHAZ EBERT

Chaz Ebert of RogerEbert.com will participate in a post-screening discussion about the film topics and the power of documentary storytelling. Chaz visited the program last summer while the documentaries were in production. 'I was so excited about the program that I went to speak to the future filmmakers. I wanted them to know that I too became interested in film while I was living in CHA housing. It is important to me that they look to the future to see how what they bring to the program can help change the direction of their lives.' Chaz explained.

FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE LINE-UP OF DOCUMENTARY FILMS

The collection of award-winning films to be screened in the Claudia Cassidy Theater (2nd Floor) include: RISE UP, BIRTHDAY, HOPE FOR CHANGE, WHAT IF I TOLD YOU, LOVE IS LOVE, and BABIES HAVING BABIES.

Visiting Artists Series: A Screening of 'The Modern Jungle' with director Charles Fairbanks

lease join us for a screening of the Slamdance Film Festival hit documentary 'The Modern Jungle'. A conversation with filmmaker Charles Fairbanks will immediately follow the screening.

The Modern Jungle is a portrait of globalization filtered through the fever dream of a Mexican shaman, don Juan, who falls under the spell of a pyramid-scheme-marketed nutritional supplement. Juan's neighbor Carmen lives simply, in harmony with the land her martyred husband paid for with his life. THE MODERN JUNGLE documents their struggles and encounters with outside forces: from capitalism and commodity fetish, to the culture of cinema, and the directors of this film.

Please note: Seating is limited. RSVPing with Eventbrite does not guarantee admission. Please come early in ensure that you get a seat. We seat on a first come-first served basis.

Film Fatales Screening: Jeanne Dielman, 23. Quai du Commerce, 1080 Brussels

Chantal Akerman's 'Jeanne Dielman, 23. Quai du Commerce, 1080 Brussels' (1975) might be the most important piece of feminist cinema ever made. Akerman made the film when she was only 25 years old and used a largely female crew.

Come and revel in the films rhythmic, unsettling depiction of order, women's roles in society and Akerman's spin on the largely male obsession with realism on screen.

The screening will be followed by discussion led by DePaul professor and filmmaker Shayna Connelly. There will be FREE FOOD. Bring your friends and anyone else you think should see this film (aka everyone).
