Summary

A detailed study of transmission, signaling and switching systems for facilities-based public and private voice networks. Voice digitization and transmission over circuit-switched and packet-switched infrastructures. VoIP, SIP, and Computer telephony integration techniques will also be covered. Quality of service issues in integrated voice-over-data systems.

This course is lecture/discussion oriented, designed to involve the student?s participation in each class. Quizzes, projects, and assignments will be used to prepare the student for ?real world? solutions to telecommunications issues. Each student will be required to do a 10-minute presentation to the class or in the lab as part of their project. Projects will start in week 8, and continue through the last week of class. Projects will be individual or done with one partner only.

There will be a Mid-Term Exam and Final Exam. The Final Exam will be take-home. Exam structure: 50-60% lecture, 40-50% assigned readings.

Grading

Each student will be evaluated on his/her own performance (no grading curve will be used).
