Emily Ellis

MFA in Screenwriting

Hometown: Arkansas, United States

Undergrad Degree: BA in Communication – University of Arkansas

Emily M. Ellis, born and raised Arkansan, is currently a third-year graduate student in the MFA Screenwriting program here at DePaul University. She graduated with a BA in Communication from the University of Arkansas (woo pig), where she took a Special Topics class in Screenwriting. After gaming the system to take the same class again, it was clear that the desire to write movies was more than a hobby. She applied to the program on a whim before starting a full-time job, and 8 months later, when the time came, she decided to attend in less than a month. She is a queer writer whose work explores identity, perception vs truth, and the incredible, messy art of being human. When not writing, Emily works full-time in Marketing in the AEC industry. Here, she uses the same storytelling techniques used to write feature-length scripts to tell the story of small businesses. She enjoys reading, going to the movies (obviously), exploring Chicago, and visiting her family back in Arkansas whenever she can. Most importantly, she believes in the power of storytelling because "no matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world." (Dead Poets Society, 1989)
