CSC 531 Introduction to Bioinformatics
Summary
This course covers the applications of algorithmic techniques to solve important problems in molecular biology. The problems examined include restriction mapping, motif finding, genome rearrangement, sequence alignment, and protein folding problems. Algorithmic techniques for solving such problems exactly and approximately will be examined with an eye on efficiency.

Grading
Homework Assignments (include programming) -- 40%
Assignments are due at the beginning of the class on the specified due date.
Midterm --- 20%
DL students can take the midterm exam anytime starting at 5:45 PM on Wednesday, May 7, and ending at 11:59 PM on Sunday, May 11. Students who are unable to take the midterm on the scheduled date, and have sound reasons, should contact me in advance.
Final Exam --- 40%
DL students can take the final exam anytime starting at 5:45 PM on Wednesday, June 11, and ending at 11:59 PM on Sunday, June 15. Students who are unable to take the midterm on the scheduled date, and have sound
reasons, should contact me in advance.
Grades will be assigned according to the standard A, B, C, D, F range scheme.
Prerequisites

evaluations are anonymous; the instructor and administration do not track who entered what responses. A program is used to check if the student completed the evaluations, but the evaluation is completely
separate from the student’s identity. Since 100% participation is our goal, students are sent periodic reminders over three weeks. Students do not receive reminders once they complete the evaluation.
