Cryptography is the art of communicating secret messages. This course discusses the basic methods of both cryptography and cryptanalysis, the making and breaking of encrypted messages. We will start with classical ciphers and mathematical foundations, then see block ciphers (such as DES, AES), public key cryptography (such as RSA), and advanced material as time permits.


Required text: Trappe, Washington: Introduction to Cryptography, Prentice Hall, ISBN: 0131862391 ; 2nd edition (July 15, 2005).

There are several cryptography texts (e.g. Vaudenay's Classical Introduction to Cryptography) available as e-books at the library web-page for free (you need your campusconnect information to log into the proxy server).


Homework, quizzes: 40%, Midterm: 30%, Final: 30%.


CSC 403 (Data Structures)


Week 1-2 Mathematical Foundations, Classical Ciphers.
Week 3- 4 Modern Block Ciphers (DES, AES), attacks (differential cryptanalysis), and modes of operation.
Week 5-8 Public Key Cryptography (DH Key exchange, RSA, ElGamal) and attacks
Week 9-10 Advanced topics (Elliptic Key Cryptography, Secret Sharing, Zero-Knowledge Proofs, Error Correcting Codes)
