Course Description:
In this class, students will explore the image making possibilities of TVPaint and Photoshop in the creation of digital paintings and animation. The principles and practice of traditional painting techniques (oil, acrylic and watercolor) will be applied to a digital image making. Each week students will create either still or moving images with consideration for color, composition and perspective. Experimentation with program features such as custom brushes, filters, opacity, layer modes and texturing tools with be required depending on the assignment. This is a class where you will paint something every week.

Learning Goals:
? introduce students to digital paintbrushes in TVPaint and Photoshop
? analyze traditional paintings and find strategies to create a painterly look with digital tools
? apply digital painting strategies in the creation of animated movement, i.e., blurs, moving holds, metamorphosis
? use filters and layer modes to create painterly textures and lighting effects

Things you will need to bring to class ? your sketchbook and a portable drive. Your works-in-progress, any reference images you want to use and any non-digital art materials if you want to experiment with hybrid images.

Online sources and tutorials: I will post these in the content section of D2L, but feel free to recommend your own favorites to the class.

Documentation: A major part of this class involves experimenting with techniques to achieve a desired look. While there?s many means to an end, you will be asked to mess around, make mistakes and surprise yourself. See what works and what doesn?t ? then share your discoveries with the rest of the class. With that in mind ? document your process!

These can be brief, one-page descriptions in paragraph form where you relay what worked and what didn?t, what tools you used and any technical hurdles you?ve leapt or are still struggling with. Submit one for each assignment in PDF or a Word doc.

Grading Breakdown:
5 Backgrounds (interiors, landscapes, still life, etc.) ? 10 points each
1 Final Project ? 15 points
3 Characters ?points each ? 10 points each
Documentation of process ? 5 points

Work Expectations: Everyone is required to come to class ready to work, so bring your files with you. No working on projects for other classes while this class is in session and no social media or texting. If necessary, make arrangements in your schedule so that you can complete work in the labs. Not having a Cintiq or the programs at home is not an excuse for sloppy or late work. Do what it takes to complete your best work.

BACK UP YOUR WORK: Failure of computer software and or Hardware will not be accepted as an extenuating circumstance for late projects or incomplete grades so back up your work on a regular basis and always save incrementally if working on a computer.
ATTENDANCE POLICY

More than two absences will automatically result in a one-letter grade reduction for the course. Any student missing four or more classes will receive an "F" for the quarter. Contact me before class if you are unable to attend. Being late to class two times counts as one absence.

You are responsible for any missed lectures and assignments. If you miss a class, it is still your responsibility to turn in the assignment on time.

No incompletes will be given without documented proof of circumstances beyond your control.
You may not miss the final class date. Doing so will equal an automatic one-letter grade reduction of your final grade. If for some reason you cannot make our final, you must contact your instructor BEFORE the class. Excuses given after the fact will not be accepted.

THE PHOTOSHOP HALF

Week 1 ? 9/10
Intro to the class, surveys, course expectations.
How to use your sketchbook for this class. Brushes to download and experiment with. Creating a palette and ?blue lining?. Practice drawing and brush technique.
Assignment #1: Monochrome, still life. Full description in Content of D2L, in the Assignments section.

Week 2 ?9/17
Critique Monochrome pieces. Triadic Palettes, adjustment layers, exploring ways to build up color. Interiors.

Week 3 ?9/24
Moving Holds, Weird birds
Experimenting with new brushes, Photoshop video layers, and ?boiling?.
Assignment: Create 3 different GIFs of the same character, each with its own art-working style. See assignment description on D2L

Week 4 ? 10/1
Landscape Redux
Art history mash-ups, clipping masks, adjustment layers, further exploration of transform options, photo collage, color correction in Photoshop.
Assignment: Create a landscape using two vastly different images as a reference. See assignment details description on D2L

Week 5 ? 10/8
Patterns and Filters using found images or custom brushes. Collage characters if we have time.
Assignment: ?Build? a background using patterns you?ve made from various textures or patterns you make yourself. See assignment description on D2L


THE TVPAINT HALF

Week 6 ? 10/15
Intro to TVPaint basics and painting tools, working with layers, experimenting with the brushes.
Assignment: Creating 12 frame cycle of a single object. See assignment description on D2L

Week 7 ?10/22
Review Cycles
TVPaint - Papers, brush textures, working with stencils and shape tools.
Assignment: Create an interior using three of the above. See assignment description on D2L

Week 8 ? 10/29
Review interiors - Making your own brushes, making animated brushes.
Introduce Final Project - Panorama/ Multiple perspective background
Assignment: Begin preliminary blue line sketches for final panoramic shot (i.e., panning background)

Week 9 ?11/5
More brush techniques. Work on final project (TVPaint or Photoshop)
Look at preliminary drawings and crit.
Assignment: Continue working on final

Week 10 ? 11/12
Individual meetings as needed. Regular attendance is expected

Week 11 - Final Critique Date and Time
All work is finished and ready to view. Do not be late and make travel plans accordingly. Missing the final critique means an automatic one-letter grade reduction.
