The Institute for Professional Development (IPD) was formed by the Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media of DePaul University in 1984 to assist both individuals and businesses in keeping pace with the rapid development of computer technologies. The Institute offers a variety of intensive certificate programs designed for IT and business professionals who wish to learn new technologies and upgrade their skills in a short amount of time. Most recently, the Institute introduced a Career Change Program for individuals without significant computing knowledge, but who have a strong interest and aptitude in technology and wish to make a career transition.

Certificate programs are catalogued as courses of DePaul University and are offered on the university's quarter schedule, with a new session beginning each fall, winter, spring, and summer. Individuals who enroll in the programs are matriculated as non-degree-seeking students of the university, and enjoy all rights, privileges and responsibilities afforded to such students.
